Please find on our website information about our research, and our facilities as well as the published research results of our laboratory. For any questions about what we do, or if you want to work with us, please feel free to contact us.
If you're interested in what we do and you would like to spend some time in our lab for your master studies, a PhD program, or a research internship, the University of Tokyo hosts various exchange programs with universities worldwide. Please contact us early enough (preferably about a year before the start of your stay) if you want to apply. We'd be glad to receive you as part of our team.

I don't speak Japanese, and I don't know whether I can handle my start in Japan. Do you offer any help? |
One Japanese student assistant will be assigned to support and manage your settling down in Japan. He/She and some university staff will help you finish any bureaucratic procedures, purchase furniture and/or a mobile phone, open your bank account, etc. Please do not care so much about daily things, except for your living cost.

Where is the laboratory located? |
There are two campuses, where we have rooms for experiments; one is Kashiwa (柏) campus, and the other is Hongo (本郷) campus. You can tranfer between these campuses in 1 hour by train and bus, but rarely you need to move. You can attend classes in one campus, since there are remote lecture systems.
Hongo campus is located near the center of Tokyo whereas Kashiwa campus is located in the suburbs of Tokyo. This is a very new campus, and there are many international students. Check the access pages on the very top for further details about the location of the campuses.

Are there any mandatory seminars? Do I have to be in lab all the time? |
A laboratory seminar is held for about two hours every week during the lecture periods.
Additional seminars are welcome to hold or join if you want. There is no strict rule about core time. Recommended time to discuss with professors is 9am-6pm though. You can spend weekends as you like. |
Do you only work? |
During summer term, all of us are going somewhere as an anual laboratory trip, and throughout the year there will be many get-togethers where you can enjoy talking with the lab members.
What about my research and the topic? Will there be help, and do you have enough equipment? |
Fortunately there are many colleagues in our laboratory, so you can easily discuss anything with us. You should, however, discuss your research with the professors prior to coming to Japan. Please contact them in time.
You will find much equipment here; high-speed cameras, spectrometers, CW lasers, high-power pulse lasers, optics, chambers, pumps, complessor, high-performance PCs, and personal note PCs and desks. If you want some information about equipments, please contact us or check our facilities page. |
Can I go to conferences during my stay? |
Opportunities to join conferences depend on their schedule and research budget to support your travel fees. We hope to enable that you may be able to attend at least one international conference per year.
When can I enter your laboratory? Are there requirements for graduation? |
You can enter the course (Master, PhD) from April or October. The entrance exam for both is in the end of August. If you're intending to join as a research student or intern, please contact us for an appropriate starting date. Acquiring proper visa and documents from the university requires some time, so please be aware that we might not accept applications on a very short notice.
You can graduate in every quarter of a year period, but you need to publish some journal articles if you want to receive a PhD degree. |
Are there any ways to fund my stay? |
If you would like to study with us, you need to get your scholarship by yourself. Our laboratory budget cannot support your living cost. Some information of scholarships supported by Japanese government branch "MEXT" is here.
If you'd like to study in Japanese PhD course or as a postdoc, you can also apply to some fellowships of JSPS (Japanese Society for the Promotion of Science). - Fellowships - 外国人特別研究員 (in Japanese) |
